Macro photography is where the underwater world becomes much bigger by looking at something much smaller.
A reef that seems ordinary from a distance can become a completely different place once you slow down and start searching for details. Tiny animals, textures, patterns and colours appear everywhere, often in places you would otherwise swim straight past.
For me, that is a large part of the appeal. Macro photography turns a dive into a search for subjects that are easy to miss and often difficult to photograph well. Getting close is only part of it. Position, background, light, movement and patience usually matter just as much as magnification.
The subjects can be almost anything: nudibranchs, shrimps, crabs, small fish, eggs, eyes, textures or strange little creatures that only become obvious once you stop looking for the big things.
Macro photography is not about making the ocean smaller. It is about discovering how much is hidden inside it.
